A Toast to Week 1 Adventure

“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow know what you truly want to become.”

– Steve Jobs

I can’t believe it’s been a week that I started the Live Your Legend “LYL Start a Blog” Challenge,  1 week that I started 52 weeks…52 adventures. It’s been quite the week!

The main adventure I embarked on this week was to go to an open day for Toastmasters.  It was a liberating, thrilling and incredible experience.

Firstly -what is Toastmasters you might ask? It is an educational organization that operates clubs all over the world, the purpose of which is to help members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills

I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I’m not going to go into all the details as you should really experience this for yourself- but I was truly inspired by the speeches, the vulnerability displayed, the willingness to learn and the supportive environment… Everyone showed up- the speakers, the evaluators- it was all in the spirit of sharing, being together and helping each other.

In the middle of the session was a segment called “Table Topics”- questions around a theme are asked, members are selected to stand and give an impromptu speech of up to 2 mins. I got called up- my question: what is the importance of wedlock? I took a breath, stood at the lectern and opened my heart. What came out was a speech on my parents, on love, on shining light on darkness- on sharing an adventure with someone you love. I welled up as I thought of my family, of Paris. The speech lasted 1min 15secs- it was exhilarating, energizing. I won an award: Best Table Topic and I got a purple ribbon.

I’m so glad I took a chance and went for it. I’ve joined and become a Toastmasters member – I look forward to developing new skills and gaining confidence . One thing I’m discovering already is that I have a voice, I have ideas and stories that I want to share with the world.

What was your main adventure this week?
